Farm Store

Over the years we have experimented with a number of ways to expand the diversity of our own grassfed farm in Upstate NY…from finding ways to make use of the fats and the fiber, to making hand crafts that we sell at our farmers’ market.  Now that we’ve worked out the packaging and shipping side of the equation, we are thrilled to bring them to you here.

Farmers’ Soaps I make these myself from our rendered grassfed beef fat, then season them at the end with a touch of raw organic honey from Bob’s bees, and a tiny splash of organic lavender essential oil. They are a very long lasting soap, reputed to last longer than some marriages. Each box includes 2-3 soaps, totaling 6 ounces. Price includes shipping. USA: $12, Canada: $19

BuzzOINKment Skin Salve: For generations, lard has been preferred by herbalists for its excellent carriage of medicinal properties to skin.  After rendering our lard and beeswax, we infuse it with calendula flowers, comfrey leaves and roots, lavender and nettles.  A wonderful salve for soothing dry, chapped, irritated or (mildly) burned skin.

Each container holds 2 ounces of salve.  All prices include shipping.

BuzzOINKment Lip Balm Have you ever studied the ingredients in an “all natural” tube of lip balm? They typically contain imported oils and vitamin e, extracted from genetically modified soy. Seeking an alternative to rubbing Frankenfood ingredients on my lips, I discovered that our own pastured pork lard, naturally rich in fat soluble vitamins, was the perfect lip balm base. Blended with our own organic all-natural beeswax, these lip balms are smooth, stay solid when in your pocket, and are 100% from our farm. They have a mildly sweet flavor from the beeswax. I make only 2 flavors: Tangerine and healing Peppermint- Tea Tree. Your box of 4 will include a selection of each. Price includes shipping and 4 tubes of lip balm. USA: $13.35, Canada: $20.95

Bay Rum Shaving Soap I began making these when my dad complained that he couldn’t find any soap or shaving cream that could help him get a clean shave without irritating his sensitive Irish skin….little did he know that the solution was right in the farm yard! Our lard is blended with tallow, olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil and bentonite clay, then scented with essential oils of bay and lime. These shaving soaps smell heavenly, and come as a set of three rounds that fit a standard shaving cup. Each bar lasts for about 1 year of shaves for 1 man. Price includes shipping. USA: $27.85, Canada: $34.45

Tallow-Beeswax Candles Grassfed Candles?! Tallow candles were once common in every American household. Made from rendered beef fat, they could be produced by virtually anyone with readily available materials in the home. However, they tended to be smoky, fast-burning and often malodorous. Once paraffin (a by-product of petroleum refineries) became available, tallow candles soon became a thing of the past. By Mixing traditional tallow rendered from our beef animals with natural beeswax, we have created candles that are smokeless, slow-burning and scented with balsalm essence. We are proud to offer these candles that bring cheer to your table, revive traditional craftsmanship, and emulate the thrift and prudence of our ancestors. Set of 6 (6 inch) hand-dipped tapers. Price includes shipping. USA: $25, Canada: $31, International: $45

Bayberry-Beeswax Candles Bayberry wax candles have long been prized for their clean burn, beautiful color and, of course, their lovely fragrance. As genuine bayberry wax was (and still is) difficult to come by, bayberry candles were reserved for special occasions, and as such, tradition and lore grwe around them: “A bayberry candle burned down tot he socket, brings luck to the home and wealth to the pocket.” Two parts pure New England bayberry wax is mixed with 1 part natural beeswax to make these tapers less brittle and enhance their fragrance. Set of 4 8-inch tapers. Price includes shipping. USA: $37.25, Canada: $44.85

Sap Bush Hollow Wool Yarn Our yarn is made by a family-operated woolen mill in Prince Edward Island, where they use a special washing process that does not strip the lanolin from the final product. The result is a soft, pliable yarn that knits (and re-knits…and re-knits) beautifully, doesn’t become brittle over time, and doesn’t feel itchy on your skin. Terrific for sweaters, socks, shawls, mittens, hats. A wonderful all-purpose yarn, it is 2 ply worsted weight, and knits up at 4.5 stitches to the inch on size 7 needles. We recommend sizes 5- 7 needles for sweaters, size 3 needles for socks. Price includes shipping. Adirondack Pack Basket  Okay, okay. These aren’t made from grassfed livestock. Instead, my husband Bob makes these baskets by hand in the traditional Northwoods style, based on Ojibwa and Iroquois designs.  He weaves them when it is his turn to watch the kids inside on rainy days, and it is my turn to run around getting wet on the farm. Historically these pack baskets were used by voyaguers, trappers, and “sports” for two centuries.  The regional popularity of these utilitarian packs continues to this day.
Traditionally, these baskets are made from black ash splints – hard to find, heavy and very expensive.  This basket is made from Asian reed, the modern standard for “flat woven” baskets – lightweight, durable, and renewable.
Woven and lashed by hand, no glues, tacks, or staples are used.  It has leather adjustable straps, and with use it conforms to fit your back. Price includes shipping.  18 inches high, approx 45 inches around (sizes vary slightly for each pack), sized to fit an adult.  USA: $250, Canada: $275  Please allow 2-4 weeks for turnaround.
